Tutorials for Magento and Joomla! - Yireo

Using BingTranslate with JoomFish

Using the Yireo BingTranslate extension for Joomla!, you can translate content from within your Joomla! backend. Because the Joomla! core ships only with multilingual behaviour from version 1.6 upwards, within Joomla! 1.5 you need to use a multilingual extension like JoomFish. This guide explains the basic steps for translating content within JoomFish using our BingTranslate extension.

Install and configure Yireo BingTranslate

First of all, install and configure the Yireo BingTranslate extension following the guidelines. Make sure that both the component as the editor-plugin are installed. The editor-plugin needs to be published using the Joomla! Plugin Manager. Within the component you need to enter the API-key that you received from the Bing API site.

Translating content in JoomFish

To translate content using JoomFish, navigate to the JoomFish component and then to Translation. By default, the listing of content is empty. You need to choose the right Content Element and the right language. For example, you would choose as content element Contents if you want to translate Joomla! articles, and choose for instance as language French. This way you can translate default English articles to French.

Starting to translate a specific item

Once the content listing shows items that can be modified, pick one item and start translating it. If this item is new, the translated text is still empty. To get a quick start, you can use the Copy button to copy the original text. This is ideal when using the BingTranslate extension.

Also make sure that in the topright corner you have selected the language this item should be translated to.

Translating content automatically

Once there is text available, you can translate it. WIth some editors, the text that is copied by JoomFish, is actually not copied to the corresponding textarea. To fix this, save the item first. Once this is done, you can use the BingTranslate button to translate text.

If you are Dutch, you can see that the translation is actually not that good at all. This is the point of using BingTranslate in your backend, and not in your frontend. It allows you to finetune the text before actually putting it online.
