SimpleLists FAQ: Usage

The following FAQ contains questions and answers for using SimpleLists.

How to install from URL

When installing a component the Joomla! Administrator offers you to Upload Package File but also two other options: Install from Directory and Install from URL. The last one - Install from URL - allows you to install the extension directly from a site like this one.

You can install the latest version of SimpleLists by using the following URL:

"Internal file" does not show all files

SimpleLists allows you to point an item to an "Internal file" link, which means you could built a simple download-page using SimpleLists. However in a default situation probably you will not be able to choose for instance ZIP-files, because they do not appear in the browse screen.

For this to work, you will need to follow the steps in the following tutorial:

How do I integrate SimpleLists with JoomFish?

From our Download-section you can download the JoomFish add-on for SimpleLists. After you copy the file simplelists.xml to the folder administrator/components/com_joomfish/contentelements/, go to the JoomFish backend and check whether SimpleLists is showing up in the list of Content Elements.

The SimpleLists Content Element allows you to translate SimpleLists items. The categories are part of the Joomla! core and can be translated already with this add-on.

Is the Read-More button missing?

While a WYSIWYG editor can be used to edit the text of an item, the "Read-More" button is removed on purpose. Some people have asked me why. The main reason for this, is that SimpleLists is far more flexibel so doesn't need that button.

Imagine that a "Read-More" button would exist. Now you can split up the text in an introduction text and a full text. You might think this comes in handy. But first of all, the point of having seperate "Link Settings" on the right is completely gone - it's not logical.

Second of all, don't confuse SimpleLists items with Joomla! articles. The benefit of using SimpleLists, is that you can have a seperate introductiom text which does NOT appear in full text.

If you don't care about these arguments and you're just using SimpleLists for the smooth layouts, think again: You're looking for "Smooth" and "Articles", and not "Simple" and "Lists".

About "Read More Class" and "Link Class"

In the parameters you can see two options to define CSS-classes: The "Read More Class" and the "Link Class". What's the difference between these two?

It's a bit confusing, but here's the explanation: The "Read More Class" refers to the "Read More Link" which is an extra link put below the Item Text. This link is accompanied by the CSS-class "readon" (also the default of Joomla! articles itself), but you can add your own CSS-class to it.

Each item has its own link. But the "Read More Link" is not the only way to add the link: You can also make the image clickable and the title ("linked title"). The second setting "Link Class" refers to the CSS-class which can be added to the anchor-tag in these cases.
